What are implant retained Dentures?

Implant retained dentures are an excellent option for patients who want a more secure alternative to traditional removable dentures. They are designed to stay firmly in place, reducing movement and improving comfort during everyday activities.

During your initial consultation, your denturist will evaluate your oral health and discuss your lifestyle, daily routines, and personal preferences to determine whether implant retained dentures are the right solution for you.

Why choose Implant Retained Dentures Instead of Fixed Porcelain Dentures?

While porcelain crowns and bridges are a popular option, implant retained dentures offer several advantages for both appearance and function, especially for patients who prefer a removable solution.

Implant-retained dentures are suitable for many patients and can be an excellent option at almost any age. For some, the decision is based on personal preference, while for others it may depend on health or lifestyle factors.

They are commonly chosen by older adults and are generally recommended for patients who are in good overall health and do not smoke. Your denturist will help determine if this option is appropriate for you during your consultation.

Implant Dentures

At Bright Smiles, we provide detailed instructions on how to care for your implant-supported dentures. They should be removed at night and during cleaning to maintain proper oral hygiene.

Special cleaning tools may be recommended to clean around the implant attachments. As a general guideline, dentures may need to be replaced approximately every five years, while attachments and clips typically require replacement every 6 to 12 months due to normal wear.

How do implant retained Dentures Work?

Implant retained dentures are made with an acrylic base that closely matches the natural color of your gums. Artificial teeth are carefully designed and attached to this base to create a natural appearance.

Typically, two or more dental implants are placed in the jawbone to hold the denture securely in place. There are two main types of implant-retained dentures

Bar Retained Dentures

Bar-retained dentures use a thin metal bar that is secured to the jawbone with two to five implants. The bar follows the natural curve of the jaw, and the denture is fitted over it using clips or attachments for stability.

Ball/Locator Retained Dentures

Ball or locator retained dentures use a snapstyle mechanism. Each implant has an attachment that connects to a matching attachment on the denture, allowing it to “click” securely into place while still being easy to remove for cleaning. This option is often preferred due to its simplicity and lower cost.

What Can I Expect from Implant Supported Dentures?

Compared to traditional dentures, implant supported dentures offer significantly improved stability and comfort. They are less likely to shift or loosen, making everyday activities more enjoyable and stress-free.

Many patients find it easier to speak clearly and eat a wider variety of foods. In some cases, implant supported dentures can be designed with less palate coverage, improving comfort and taste sensation.
